Health is Ultimate Wealth

Detoxify Your Body!

Are you feeling tired and sluggish? Are you struggling with digestive problems and skin problems? Can’t seem to lose weight? Then it’s time for you to detox your body.

Detoxification basically means cleaning the blood. This is done by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. However, when this system is compromised, impurities aren’t properly filtered and every cell in the body is adversely affected.

Detoxification, when done right, can provide many health benefits, including:

  1. Resting the organs through fasting;
  2. Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body;
  3. Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;
  4. Improving circulation of the blood; and
  5. Refueling the body with healthy nutrients.

There are many ways that you can detoxify, I prefer having healthy drinks. Here are 2 of my favorite recipes that I follow when I detox my body.

1. Lemon Detox Drink

This is an easy recipe. All you need is lemon and water in a glass (this can either be cold or warm), just squeeze a lemon and drink every day before you consume anything and before you go to bed.

This lemon detox drink can make your skin beautiful and more elastic, while clearing acne.

2. Kale Detox Drink

This kale drink is good for you if you like green vegetables. It comes with vitamins A, C, B6 and K, along with copper, magnesium, potassium, iron, and other minerals. For this simple recipe, all you need is the following ingredients:

A handful of kale leaves

Half an apple

One cup of coconut water

Once the ingredients are ready, simply remove the hard ribs found on the leaves of kale. Then, add the leaves to your blender along with the apple and coconut water. As with other drinks, all you need to do is blend the ingredients together until they are completely mixed. Drink cold or consume right away.

Essential oils for Stress and Anxiety

We lead such busy lives and there is nothing more powerful to help us deal with our stress than to spend time relaxing and gathering ourselves in a state of calm.

Essential oils have been used for many thousands of years to bring about emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. When used correctly, inhaling or applying essential oils to the skin can bring about a sense of calmness and improve emotional well-being.

It is beneficial to breathe in certain essential oils known for their relaxing, therapeutic effects when we feel stressed.

Each oil has a unique chemical composition that supports a different system of the body. When we inhale a scent through our nose, receptor cells in the olfactory organ receive the aroma and send a message to the limbic system, which is commonly referred to as the “emotional brain.”

When using essential oils always dilute with a carrier oil before it’s applied to the skin. This reduces your risk of irritation. Some popular carrier oils are almond, grapefruit, coconut, and jojoba.

Essential oils should never be ingested, there’s not enough research on anyone essential oil to prove it’s safe to swallow. Each essential oil is very different, and some are toxic.

I personally find the essential oils that I have listed below effective at relieving stress and associated side effects, such as depression, insomnia, tension, and anxiety.

Basil – This warming oil is beneficial in relieving intellectual fatigue and nervous exhaustion, bringing strength and clarity to the mind. It works quickly to bring relaxation in the moment and assists with digestive issues due to stress.

Chamomile, Roman – Chamomile is a wonderfully sweet and soothing oil to smell. It has a noticeable effect on the nervous system by calming and easing depression. It is very effective for stress, anxiety and insomnia.

Clary Sage – This beautiful plant and flower has a noticeable euphoric action on the body. It can be used to help with anxiety, stress, nervous tension and depression. It works as a tonic for nervous fatigue and mental exhaustion. The scent is loved by most but some may find it too strong.

Grapefruit – This cooling and uplifting oil is a must go-to for stress, burnout and depression. It is like sunshine in a bottle. Very useful for those who are affected by ‘winter depression’ due to the decrease of light in the winter.

Jasmine – Handpicked in the early light of the morning, jasmine is one of the most effective oils for the nervous system. Supportive for anxiety, depression and emotional dilemmas. It works quickly to change our mood towards optimism.

Lavender –  My favorite essential oilOtherwise known as ‘true lavender’, this is one of those oils that does it all. Lavender is very calming and relaxing and has a harmonizing effect on the nervous system without being sedative. Wonderful for insomnia, mental stress and anxiety. It is also helpful for migraines and headaches.

Lemon – One smell of lemon essential oil and you can’t help but feel better. Lemon oil can lift the spirits and helps one to overcome mental fatigue and burnout. It can be used to help the brain with decision making in a calming matter.

Sweet Marjoram – Calming and nutritive to the nervous system, Sweet Marjoram can be used to help with stress, anxiety and insomnia.  It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and lowers the sympathetic function. Wonderful for sleep issues caused by stress.

Neroli – is a powerful sedative and antidepressant. Useful for insomnia, anxiety and depression. This oil is one of the most beautiful oils that you can smell. Distilled from the flowers of the blooming orange, Neroli makes you feel better within minutes of smelling it.

Sweet Orange – Sweet Orange is a cheerful oil that helps to life one’s spirits. It is also wonderful for sleep and immune system blends for children. Mildly sedative and antidepressant. Wonderful for anxiety, insomnia and nervousness.

Rose – Uplifting to the spirit and mind, rose is a wonderful essential oil for stress, anxiety and depression.

Sandalwood – Sandalwood is a calming and grounding oil. It has a wonderful smell that brings about a special moment when it is smelled.

Have regular massages designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, this gentle massage, with essential oils, does wonders all through the power of touch and smell. Some of the plant oils used at La Vita, like Lavender and Jasmine have been proven to help with a number of stress-related conditions, like anxiety and insomnia. Massages can create balance within the body.

Breast Awareness

The pink ribbon is the most prominent symbol of breast cancer awareness, and in many countries the month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women, and the second main cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

What causes breast cancer?

Breast cancer is thought to be caused by a combination of our genes, lifestyle choices and surrounding environment.

There are many things, or factors, that can increase or decrease the risk of developing breast cancer. One of the biggest risk factors is increasing age. At least four out of five breast cancers occur in women over 50.

In a small number of cases, breast cancer runs in the family. Most women with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease or the faulty genes linked to breast cancer.

You can lower your risk of developing breast cancer by making changes such as drinking less alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight and being regularly physically active.

How to be breast aware

Being breast aware simply means knowing what your breasts look and feel like normally, being on the lookout for any unusual changes and getting them checked out by your doctor.
No one knows your body better than you and everyone will have their own way of touching and looking for changes – there’s no special technique and you don’t need any training.

Research suggests that other factors such as smoking, being exposed to chemicals that can cause cancer, and changes in other hormones due to night shift working also may increase breast cancer risk.

Prepare Your Skin for Waxing!

I like keeping my skin smooth and hairless for weeks at a time, waxing is the only way to go for me! It’s a perfect solution for all my hairier spots.

La Vita Spas ( have a range of waxing treatments you can choose from that will suit your needs. When visiting the Spa a little skin care preparation can go a long way in making your waxing appointment less painless, and most importantly effective. Here are a few tips on how to prepare yourself in advance for a waxing skin treatment.

Check Your Skin

Always examine your skin before your appointment. Broken or inflamed dermis will need time to heal before it’s waxed.

Next, check that your hair is the right length. It should be just long enough for the wax to grip. Any longer or shorter can be painful.

Exfoliate Lightly

Exfoliating loosens away dead skin and prevents ingrown hairs. Skip harsh scrubs a few days before you go to the spa for a wax.

Moisturize Your Skin

Be sure to moisturize in the days leading up to the appointment. It will allow the skin to more easily relax. Never do it on the day of your appointment, because it can coat the hair and interfere with the wax’s grip, rendering your waxing service painful and useless.

Keep Your Skin Clean

Especially for sensitive areas, like the bikini wax, keep your skin as clean as possible. Waxing opens the skin up to infection, particularly in areas normally warm or damp. Take special care to keep these areas squeaky clean before waxing.

What is your Spring Skin Care Routine?

I always remember that my winter clothes need to be packed away after the cold season and to take out all my flowery lighter Spring clothes but I always forget to change my skin care routine. How many of you do this? Do you also remember to change your skin care routine?

So as the weather warms up, try some of these tips to up your spring skin care routine.

Let your Skin Glow

Try using a lighter foundation in Spring to prevent your pores from being clogged or skip using a foundation and go natural. As the days warm up, we tend to sweat a lot and makeup can lead to clogged pores and acne.

Have a bath more Often

Shower/bath more than once a day. Moisturize your damp skin to lock in moisture, and only use soap for one shower a day. On your next shower/bath just rinse off with water.

Exfoliate for a glowing skin?

Gentle exfoliation once a week helps moisturizers to absorb into skin, evens skin texture. By exfoliating you will get rid of dry, dead skin cells after the winter months and restore the skin.

Swap Moisturizer for Lighter Lotion

For spring skin care, swap your heavy moisturizer for a lighter lotion if your skin is normal, or skip it altogether if you have oily, acne-prone skin. However, if you have very dry skin or eczema you may need a heavier, creamy moisturizer all year round.

Use Sun Screen and monitor your time in the sun.

It is important to wear sun screen all year round, but during spring and summer you should use SPF30 and over. Try and use a waterproof, broad – spectrum sunscreen.  and re-apply throughout the day. A light mist or gel sunscreen can feel lighter and prevent clogged pores. Remember to avoid excess sun exposure and wear hats, clothing, and sunscreen for added protection.

We are Family… a spa vacation

Girl nights, couples retreats, boys weekends, all familiar terms, but have you ever heard of family spa day? Well we want to start a revolution, where families who do wellness together, stay together.  Since spa treatments have become mainstream, and not something that is targeted towards women or exclusive. More and more people are enjoying the benefits of the spa, from massages to manicures, self love and taking care of ones body and mind is ranking high on the list of peoples needs.

La Vita Spa is proud to be associated with many family resorts around South Africa. From the western cape, KwaZulu Natal to Mpumalanga and more. When planning your next vacation, why not explore some destinations that offer a wellness spa too. And book a day for you and your family.

If you were dreaming of escaping to the mountains, Bushman’s Nek Resort has plenty for the whole family to do. Book an early morning outride, have breakfast on the deck overlooking the mountains, then spend the afternoon relaxing at the La Vita Spa onsite.

Looking to watch the waves? La Vita Spa can be found at La Montagne Resort in Ballito, this large family styled holiday destination is designed for families. The spa is open late, so after a day spent in the sun, an evening spa booking is something different to enjoy.

A family spa day is ideal for those with older children, teens and above. Those with younger kids, will enjoy a shorter time spent letting the littles have their first manicures. Cue the camera for those cute little pink nails, and happy little faces.

Family spa days are something different, and a great way to relax all together.

Don’t be boring this Father’s Day – we have 5 gift ideas for you!

Why do we always go for the traditional gifts for dad for Fathers Day? The socks, gadgets and DIY, ring a bell? Our first instinct is to grab the all familiar, sometimes impulsive or last minute item off the shelf. Well not all of us, we know some of you go that extra mile to spoil your dad, planning in advance and choosing just the right item to show how much you love him.

For those that need a little more guidance on picking something a little different this year we have put a list together for you:

1- A day at the spa for him – most of our fathers work hard each day and have plenty stress weighing them down. They would not think twice about booking themselves some indulgence at the spa. So why not make the decision for them and help them take the leap. They get to really relax, let that stress melt away and enjoy the day. This might even be his first time having a spa treatment, so maybe choose something you know your dad will be comfortable with.

2- Weekend away, if your budget allows, nothing beats some quality time together and creating more family memories. Weather this is for your dad or your husband, or both, bringing everyone together in a beautiful setting with activities and shared experiences is one of the books and something awesome to post to Facebook.

3- Are your kids still small? Why not do some arts and crafts? Not all gifts need to cost an arm and a leg, they may cost you some soap and extra cleaning up as you try to remedy the paint that has found its way onto everything. Pinterest has hundreds of Fathers Day craft ideas to use for inspiration and it’s something fun to keep the children entertained too. They will run through Sunday morning with more pep in their step, knowing they did it themselves.

4 – We as women would like to give those DIY tools and projects to our hubbies, with a giant hint, hint for them to do all those items we have had on the “to do list” – but maybe dad wants to be celebrated for being a dad. Raising his kids and having something that reflects his contribution? Why not some lovely framed photos of your kids? A set to put in his office or you could arrange a fun family shoot.

5 – Plan a fun activity, has dad wanted to always do something and never taken the leap? Think… shark cage diving, getting that tattoo he always wanted, learning to cook with professional lessons or taking up a new hobby?

Don’t Dry Out this Winter…

Updating your wardrobe? New knit wear and stylish leather boots? Stocking up on hot chocolate and warm hot water bottles. But, are you updating your skincare routine? Have you thought about it?

When there is a change in season, you can start to feel a change in the texture of your skin. It could be feeling rough and flakey in parts, especially around the elbows, knees and even your face. Many women have to change up their whole skincare routine to combat the effects of the chill in the air.

We don’t want you to feel like you need to escape and hibernate this winter, so here are some tips, tricks and products to assist you this season.

Your skin needs help to rejuvenate it and assist in the removal of old dead skin cells, that can leave your texture ashy and lack luster. We can’t stress exfoliating your skin enough. If you are like any hard working busy women, your skin routine can be something you don’t attend to often, so try to exfoliate once a week.

Drink Lots of Water

I know what you are thinking, ‘really in winter’ – yes, keep up with the H20, your body needs to keep hydrated. If the thought of cold water does not encourage you, why not a warm tea, with lemon and no milk. A hot cup of rooiboos can do wonders.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage is a great way to improve your circulation and invigorate the skin. It can also assist those tired muscles that are taking strain on the coldest of days. Treat yourself and even your partner to this wonderful experience.

Moisturize that skin

Start a daily routine of using a good body butter to keep the skin supple and flaky free.

Suggested product: Vanilla Shea Body Butter
